I Want My Hour Back!


hourglass green sandToday Daylight Saving Time started and the first thing I remember saying to myself this morning is, “I want my hour back.” I wanted back the hour that was snatched from me. That hour of peace and quiet for my Sunday. Then I heard my own voice in my head say the same thing I tell my clients, “Remember that time doesn’t exist anyway, and you have all the time there is.” All I could do was laugh.

If you’re like me you may be wanting your hour back too, but like I reminded myself, we have all the time there is and since time doesn’t exist, there’s really no loss. We get to create what time is for us and learn how to walk that fine line between knowing that it’s just a concept and operating in a world where people allow it to run their lives. When we remember that and take control of our days, there are ways we can, so to say, add time back into our day.

  • Get & Stay Focused-Staying focused is a primary key when it comes to your day to day to-dos. Once you have clarity, you can create the vision and once you have the crystal clear vision, you can focus and stay on point. It becomes much easier to know what your priorities are because your vision is clear…you know what you’re up to and what’s important.
  • Let Go-Delegate the things that don’t require your expertise to do. Make the time to explain the how-to hand it over to a highly capable party and focus on the things that only you can do. Also let go of the things that aren’t important in relation to what your focus is. Those tasks that have been on your agenda for a while that you just can’t seem to get to, so they keep getting moved, or those things that you do as a way of avoiding what really needs to be done.
  • Make Your To-Be List-You’re so caught up in the things that have to be done that you lose your focus and forget to think about who you’re being. Before you can even think about what there is to do, you’ve got to take a look at who it is you need to be. Being an entrepreneur requires you to be bold, tenacious, fearless just to name a few ways of being. When you determine what you’re creating for yourself you have to step outside of who it is that you’re usually being, so make your to-be list first.

Putting these things into action can help you get up to two “additional” hours in your day. Get your hour back and then some!

 

 

Being In The Flow


Meditating At The WaterI remember a conversation two friends had about me years ago that they shared with me. One of the things that was said during their conversation was that they had no idea how I managed to get everything done. At the time I was working 40-50 hours a week, going to school full time and I was a single parent. The truth is, I didn’t even think about how to get it all done, I just did it. Looking back at that time and the number of things I managed to stay on top of without missing a beat I saw that it was my intention that helped me.

I had learned to give myself a more stable foundation for getting things done and took steps to personalize my approach to it all and those things along with having a system worked, but intention was what helped me flow. Intention is a powerful thing.  It can be described as a mental state that represents a commitment to carrying out an action or actions in the future. Desire causes intention, which causes action, which of course then causes the outcome.  Intention is what starts the momentum; the flow, and allows it to grow if you align yourself with it.

Aligning yourself with it means applying leverage by delegating the things that don’t require your expertise to complete. It also means making time to relax, the really breathe and appreciate things as they are and visualizing your outcome. Once you create the alignment, you can follow with inspired action which leads to more momentum and places you in the flow of things. Your mind shifts and is a part of the flow you’ve created and everything begins to line up.

When you are in this space of flow, there is no stopping you simply because you have set the intention and have a willingness to do that which needs to be done. You begin to see what things belong on your daily agenda and which don’t, so you delegate or remove them altogether. You’re able to start your day knowing there is much to do and that you will handle every task before you, and it happens just that way. You know when to ask for clarity and when you need to ask for help. Having the physical things in place to support your productivity is necessary and when you purposely create the environment within your being so that you flow, you become more effective and more efficient than ever. Being in the flow is how you get it all done.

 


Save Your TimeAutomation is a beautiful thing! If you’re like me you love technology. A couple of my favorite technology pieces are Evernote and SaneBox. I have some others too. We all have our gadgets that we like that help us do certain things and we have to consciously choose things to support us. Getting things done doesn’t have to be tedious and difficult. You don’t have to struggle.  At times there’s a hesitation because people find technology cumbersome or they’re intimated by it. That doesn’t mean that you have to avoid technology. When you do, essentially you avoid efficiency.

Systems in your business can make a big difference for you and your team on a daily basis. I know that some people get uncomfortable when they hear the word “system”. That’s either because they think it has to be complicated, or that it involved a lot of things and they make up that they’re hard to establish.

A system has 3 components: tools, processes and people. Really simple. All you have to do is the research, homework and testing to determine those components for each of the systems your business needs. Right now ask yourself what systems you need to put in place. Any business should have systems for contact management, communications, marketing, social media, project management, and accounting. That last one is one that you would think everyone would have in place, but I’m here to tell you it’s not. I’ve seen it time and time again and people are losing money because of it.

Look at the things that you do on a regular basis and determine which tasks can be automated to streamline and save time, then look for tools that can serve you and learn how they work to see if they’re a fit for you. Create the remaining system pieces and implement the systems.

Secondly, delegate what you don’t have to do. In other words if the task isn’t something directly related to generating income, delegate it. If it doesn’t require your specific expertise, let it go. That may be hard for some, I know, but it’s necessary. When you delegate and let go of the things that you don’t have to be the one to do, you create the space for more things that generate revenue for you. That’s how you automate and delegate! The most important thing is doing your homework for the tools, and investing time to find the person you can delegate to.

 

 


Lotus PoseOne reason most solopreneurs start their own business is because they want freedom and flexibility.  They want to be able to run the show and at the same time be able to take time off when they choose for fun and family.  This sounds ideal and it can be, but one big challenge that solopreneurs face is that they’re doing everything themselves.  They start out that way and things tend to stay that way, which doesn’t allow much time for the fun and family, so they end up without the freedom and flexibility they were looking for when they started.

If you really want that freedom and flexibility that you were looking for when you started your business, your business has to run smoothly and it has to be able to run without you in the mix.  Can you say that right now if you chose to take a few days off that things would keep moving along?  If not, there are three things that you can do starting right now that will help you keep things up and running.

First, create systems that will help you streamline things.  Most people cringe at the thought of creating systems because they think systems have to be big, complex and cumbersome.  Truth is, they really don’t.  A system has three components: processes, tools and people.  That’s it, and the components can be as simple or as complex as you like.  Place your focus on determining the processes within each, the tools that will be necessary to perform those processes and the people who will use the tools to carry out the processes.  Creating the systems that you need to keep your business running smoothly will cause you to invest some time, it’s not something that can happen over night, but it’s not something that has to take an extended period of time either.  Invest the time in yourself and in your business to take the steps necessary to determine and then set up the systems that will support you on a daily basis.

Once you have the systems created and up and running, document what you do and how it’s done so that you end up with standard operating procedures manual that anyone can follow to get the job done.  If you keep the procedures updated, anyone should be able to review a procedure and perform the designated task without a problem.

Another step in taking on the challenge of doing everything yourself, is to begin to delegate.  Let’s face it; you started your business not only for that freedom and flexibility, but to make money.  You can’t make the money that you want to make if you’re occupied with tasks that aren’t making you money.  Look at the things that you do on a regular basis and determine whether or not you have to be the one to do each.  Ask yourself if you are the only one who can do this and if the particular task is the best use of your time.  If the task at hand doesn’t require your knowledge or expertise, it belongs in the hands of a capable, trusted individual so that you can focus on the revenue generating things.  Delegating for some is not an easy thing to do.  Letting go can be a process in and of itself which is fine, the important thing is to let go of the things that don’t require your time.

If you haven’t invested in a virtual assistant, consider doing so.  If you don’t want to go that route, find a college student looking to fulfill an internship requirement. Make sure that whomever you choose has the skills to perform the job that you’re asking them to do.  Don’t be fooled into thinking that the time that it will take to train this individual will be time that you can spend on doing the things that you’re teaching them to do.  Use the operations manual that you create during your systems set up to guide them through the processes you’re introducing them to and make adjustments in the procedure where necessary.   The time that you spend teaching is time invested in your business and your bottom line.

 


Growing More TimeWe all know that there is really isn’t a way for us to get more time in our day, but so many times you’ve wised for it. The magic number is 1,440. That’s the number of minutes we get in every day. How we invest it is what makes a different. As much as you wish for it, you aren’t getting any more time, but you can shift your perspective and your approach to how you manage things. Here are seven things that you can do right now to add more time to your day by making that shift.

  • Handle things once. That means paperwork, email and voice mail messages. When you are in the midst of the paper work, email and voice mail, take instant action. Determine what to do with the paper work; decide whether to read it, reply to it, place it in your to-do file, delegate, file or trash it. Treat email and voice mail the same way. While you’re checking email at the designated time reply, call back or add it to the calls you’ll make at a designated time. The time you save can add up to more than 8 hours over the course of a month.
  • Be decisive!  Make the choice and keep it moving. The time wasted around decisions slows down your ability to take action. This can give you about an hour in your day.
  • Put it in writing. Writing things down makes a big difference when it comes to getting things done and the amount of time they take. If you’re forever thinking about the things that you have to do, your productivity suffers greatly. I tell clients all the time that it’s not real until you write it down. It clears your mind so that it’s free and you can focus.
  • Turn off the technology during your Prime Time™. Figure out the time of day when you’re at your best mentally and physically and use that period to tackle your top priorities. During that time, close your email, turn off the phone and get it done.
  • Curb the time wasters. There are things that seriously suck the time away from what’s important. Email, the internet, social media and sometimes the phone will all have you wanting time. Be conscious of the amount of time you spend on each. Use a timer while engaging in those activities if necessary. It can give you back an hour.
  • Prioritize you work. Know the priority for each of the tasks that are on your list. When you prioritize you’re not guessing about what has to be done, you already know. Knowing the value and importance of each task makes it easy to know what’s important and what you need to delete from your list.
  • Delegate. It can be hard to do, but it’s necessary. Make a list of the things that need to be done that don’t require your expertise. Find someone you trust, like a virtual assistant to handle those things so that you can focus on the things that generate revenue. It will give you back some time as well as allow you to increase you bottom line.
