I’ve always talked about the importance of routine or ritual in your day, especially your morning ritual or routine. That sets the tone for your day. Having a weekly routine is just as important. Having a routine will make the difference between you just going through your days and actually getting the end results you’re looking for. After all, that’s what it’s about.

Following a pattern sets you up so you always know what’s next and as a result to be better prepared for what is coming up, so you’re improving when it comes to being ready and having what you need in place. Once you do things repeatedly, you develop the mindset for being more efficient and you discover how to improve on your processes and how to do things more quickly.

Having your routine in place also makes it easier for you and your team to schedule additional things, so you start to create fluid movement within your week that allows for increased momentum. If you look at the things you do on a regular basis, you will see that there are things you do every week.  You may have something that should be getting done weekly, but it’s not happening because you haven’t got your schedule in place or you’re operating off of what you have in your head.

It’s just as important to have a structure for your week as it is to have a daily one. Start by making a list of the things that have to be done every week. Figure out what days and times work best for each activity that you list and get it in your calendar. You might find that something comes along that will call for a change in the day you do something, so make the shift accordingly.

Establish your weekly routine, setting up your days based upon what works for you. Remember, productivity is personal, so take the concept and make it fit you like your favorite pair of shoes. Get it in place and stick with it. It will help you become more efficient. You’ll also find that you have more control of your time with a regular routine in place. Over time your routine will contribute to your increased level of productivity.

 


When there’s no clear plan for maximizing productivity, so many things can snatch away your precious time.  Over the course of the next couple of weeks, I’m going to share info with you on those productivity killers.  Each of these will kill your productivity if you let it.  No matter how much any of them may be present in your environment, there are solutions to conquering these productivity killers.

Clutter is a big culprit when it comes to both home and office spaces.  It shows up in the form of paper, email and things to do.  Paper is the#1 culprit in homes and offices and it’s necessary to keep it under control.

Keep a handle on what comes into your inbox every day.  There are three stages for the paper you see every day: it comes in, you’re working on it, or it’s going out.  Go through your incoming items every day and determine what needs to happen to each thing.  Here, the 3 Ds apply: Discard, Delegate, Do it Now.  Discard it if it’s irrelevant , if you don’t need it any longer or if you can get it again.  Throwing away something that you don’t need is one of the bets things that you can do.  It’s a small step, but keeps the clutter away.  If you come across something that someone else can do, then delegate it, but be sure you give it to the right person with clear instruction and a completion date.  If you decide that it’s something that you need to do, then place it on your to-do list or into your calendar if it’s going to take longer than 15 minutes to complete.  Be sure to prioritize what you add to your list and be sure to schedule enough time to do each.

Paper can take over in just a short time and have you confused as to which way to go and what to do next.  this, needless to say, is not productive at all.  If you keep the paper under control, you can keep control over your inbox, how you’re spending your time and you’ll be more productive.


Did you know that for every 1 minute of planning that you do you save yourself 4 precious minutes of your time?  It’s true!  Think about that for a minute then ask yourself how much time are you losing each day because of a lack of planning.  Daily planning helps you to focus on what is important and weed out the not so important things so that your day can be more productive.

Have you planned your way through this year or have you just been winging it; flying by the seat of your pants.  We’ve all heard the saying, “if you fail to plan you plan to fail”, and it’s true.  If you’re not consciously planning what you’re doing, how do you know that you’re going to get where you want to?  Of course, you can’t get where you want to go without a clear picture and the plans followed by the action to make it all happen.   If you didn’t plan your way through this year, it’s time to take some action and start planning for next year.

Before you begin to look at what you’d like to do next year, take inventory to see what you’ve accomplished this year and if you’re where you planned to be at this point of the year.  Look at the list of things you wanted to accomplish during the course of this year and in these final months.  What’s left to do?  Do you have time to get those things done before year’s end?  If not, choose one that’s most important to you and get it done during the home stretch.  Move the other items to your January calendar.  If you’ve been winging it, there’s probably quite a few things that you haven’t finished and might not be able to before the end of the year.  Be reasonable about what you can finish before the end of the year.  Don’t rush this process; take your time.  Once that’s done you can begin to think about what’s on the agenda for next year.  I’ll share more in my next post.
