Personal power is your self-esteem, willpower, self-discipline, as well as warmth in your personality. It allows you to focus, take action and create change and is associated with the third chakra, which lies between navel and solar plexus. That chakra is all about your core self; who you are.  That energy gives you the capacity to transform inertia into movement or action. It’s also associated with being confident, responsible and reliable. All are important when it comes to getting things done. Personal power allows you to focus, take action and create change.

If time is running the show and has control of your days, you’ve given your personal power over to it. Here’s how you get it back.

 


Usually when people hear the word “power” they might think of controlling or having the ability to force things to happen, but that’s not at all what I’m talking about. Personal power is something that lies within you that enables you to dictate how your life goes. You use it to say what is so. That power gives you the capacity to make moves in your life. It’s your ability to direct what happens in your life. If you’re in possession of your personal power you have the ability to frame your days and your life.


Everyone has their own way of dealing with time. Who you are in that relationship is told by your Productivity Persona. Your Persona reveals how you deal with time and your strengths and weaknesses around it. When you look at who you are in that sense, what you’re good at and where you struggle start to make sense. Time is an elusive thing. It’s slippery and that’s one thing that makes it hard to get it all done. Hard to wrap your head around and you simply can’t lay your hands on it. It’s intangible. “Time management” can be a hard puzzle to piece together. Until you let go of how you see this thing we call time and take a personalized approach.

You are the reason you aren’t getting things done. Who you are has everything to do with why it’s not happening and it’s also what will help you discover how to knock things off your to do list with ease. You see, your Productivity Persona reveals how you relate to time and your strengths and weaknesses around it. When you look at who you are in that sense, what you’re good at and where you struggle start to make sense. Not being able to stay focused, over analyzing things to point of not taking action and lacking follow through are connected to personality traits.

If you’re like most people, no one ever told you anything about getting and staying organized or managing yourself around time. We are taught many things when we’re young but these two things are just not in the mix, so unless you have a natural disposition toward these things and have these abilities, you don’t have a clue and nine times out of ten, your latter school life and professional life suffer. Right now, if you still haven’t figured out how to deal with time, your business is probably suffering because you’re flying by the seat of your pants daily.

You learned how to tell time but didn’t learn about how to deal time, you just basically picked up your productivity abilities though osmosis. What you came to know was that time runs the show. You learned that by watching everybody else under its rule and you did the same thing. Time is running the show and you’ve given all of your power over to it. This is one reason why people struggle.

Another reason people struggle is that they don’t understand that they have a relationship with time and that it has to be considered. Getting things done means being able to reach for the things beyond ordered space and life, time for the things that matter most. Having that reach is empowered with the knowledge of who you are when it comes to time. Placing yourself at the core of it all is how your tools get chosen, processes get created and tasks get identified. Your Productivity Persona reveals your path to optimum productivity. It’s not about anything outside of you, but about putting who you are in the mix.

Optimum productivity doesn’t happen with that linear approach to time or the one size fits all boxed solutions or remedies. Your system should be built with you having explored who you are in depth. It starts with you. Productivity is personal. You can make it personal by starting with finding out who you are in your relationship with time. To-Do List and Pocket WatchThe list of things to do is so long that it can be difficult getting to the things that really matter. You know what it’s like to have a long list and have more things that need to be added before you can cross off the tasks you already have. Things get jammed up because you’re not organized, don’t know how to manage it all and if you’ve got productivity challenges or habits that don’t support you, it makes it even harder. To the point that you give a lot of time to putting out fires and not getting to what matters most.

Add the velocity of life and it’s even more challenging. Usually, people spend time working on things that are important and urgent because time isn’t given to planning, taking advantage of opportunities, and the all-important, highly avoided recreation and relaxation.

It’s time to dissect, clean up and fine tune your to-do list! Start by looking at everything you have on your plate and the things you would like to place on your plate. Make sure to include the things you’ve been walking around with in your head.

Once you’ve got everything listed, mark each item as something that either has to be done right now or something that doesn’t have to be done right now. As you do, keep in mind that you’re tearing apart your list here. The end goal is to only end up having things that are important left on your list, so this means letting go of all the things that don’t fall under that category.

Next, go back through the list and label each task either important or not important. Be very careful here, this is where things can get a bit tricky. Let go of the notion that everything is important, because it’s not. If something’s not related to your big picture, it’s irrelevant. It might be hard to do what I’m going to tell you to do now, but it’s necessary. Draw a line through everything that you’ve designated to be unimportant. Again, remember that you’re cleaning things up. Once you do, you’re only left with the things that matter.

Now that you have a list of only the important things left, you can see which have to be done right now and the ones that don’t because of the labels you gave them earlier. This is your new, fine-tuned to-do list and these are the things that should get your time. Focus on the things that have to be done right now first, then move to the things that aren’t a “right now” thing.

Moving forward, continue to focus on only the things that are important. Create new habits that have you planning and not waiting until the last minute so you have less fires to put out and things aren’t done in haste. You’ll have to face the daily temptation that will come from the things that aren’t relevant, but stay the course! Celebrate your wins, whether they’re big or small and make time for yourself. Continue to constantly and deliberately choose and remember that your focus is to drop the things that aren’t directly in line with the big picture you’re creating.
